About this puzzle: The Four Fours problem is a classic recreational-mathematics challenge dating to the late 1800s — deceptively simple, genuinely hard once you're past the easy targets. Most adults stall somewhere in the 20s. It's also a staple of grades 4–8 classrooms because it builds order-of-operations fluency (CCSS 5.OA.A.1 and 6.EE.A.1), mental arithmetic, and creative problem-solving.

How to Play

  1. Pick a target number, using the arrows or the 1–100 map.
  2. Spend exactly four 4s to build an expression — a counter tracks how many you've used.
  3. Match the expression's value to the target, then solve it to share.

Allowed operators: + − × ÷ ^ √ ! % . and parentheses for grouping. For example, 4−4+4−√4 = 2.

About Four Fours

Four 4s, every operator you know — addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponents, factorials, square roots, decimals, concatenation — build an expression that equals each target from 1 to 100. It's a classic recreational-math puzzle that doubles as one of the best order-of-operations drills available, since getting the answer wrong almost always traces back to a PEMDAS mistake, not a wrong idea.
